Backfin Blues Crab Cake Sandwich Backfin Blues Crab Cake Sandwich Crab Cake Review

Port Deposit is a quaint little town along the banks of the Susquehanna River, sitting in-between the Conowingo Dam and I-95. Since 2004, Backfin Blues has been providing an upscale dining experience in a causal setting. From Sunday brunch, to the main dinner menu, to a special wine and dinner event on a weekday night, Backfin Blues is sure to have something to amaze you with. Chef Bob Steele is always cooking something up, so don't think that the food for offer stops at the menu! Typically open just for dinner service, we managed to sneak a seat at their Sunday brunch, hoping that their namesake would be on the menu. Lucky for us (and you!) it was. Read along to see how everything turned out!

Backfin Blues offers the crab cake entree on both their dinner and Sunday brunch menus, which is a single or double broiled crab cake finished with homemade sauce or chef's aioli, along with a salad, veggie, and starch. Also on the brunch menu is a crab cake sandwich, served with choice of sauce and one side; in addition, they also have a Chesapeake Prime burger, where you can top a burger with colossal crab meat or a crab cake. We like to keep it real the first time around, so we decided on the crab cake sandwich for this review.

The crab cake itself is comprised of mostly broken up crab lumps bound together by a bready binder with a good bit of moisture. Bits of red pepper are mixed in for added flavor and color.

The crab meat has a nice flavor to it, which pairs nicely with the buttery tasting binder. While we felt there was a bit more binder in the mix than there should have been, it all complimented each other very well. While we're sure there was some spice in the mix, it was mixed in so well that it didn't really pronounce itself in any way. It just helped to frame the crab flavor. The bun was nice and solid, with a great flavor and just enough substance to hold the sandwich together while still squishing down enough so you could eat it. Which is always nice as you don't want your crab cake oozing out as you eat it!

We really felt this was an excellent crab cake, and nice to find this level of quality food in such a small town. Nothing but flavorful crab was used, and all of the flavors worked well together. If we had anything to say about it, it was that we felt that the crab cake was a bit heavier on the amount of binder than there needed to be. This does lend itself to being an excellent crab cake for a sandwich, but we're not so sure how it would work out as a double platter. That said, it's not the worst thing in the world, as everything has a fantastic flavor. So stop by and try it the next time you're passing through Port Deposit!
