Gunpowder Lodge Crab Cake Sandwich Crab Cake Review

What's better than hiking around Gunpowder Falls and enjoying the beauty of nature that Baltimore has to offer us, than to end that afternoon with some good food and cold beverages at a local nearby establishment? Nothing! Run by the same folks that bring us Freddie's, the Gunpowder Lodge (or GPL, as it is known locally) is a restaurant with an outdoorsy theme. They pride themselves on serving fresh food and providing a specials menu that changes weekly. With all of the good looking food coming out of the kitchen, we had to see if their crab cakes were on par with the rest of the menu. How were they? Let's find out!

The GPL crab cake is a 6 oz jumbo lump crab cake, made with no filler, all killer. The sandwich is served on a roll with lettuce, tomato, and sits alongside German style potato salad, cole slaw, or chips. An entree is also available, and is comprised of two 6 oz jumbo lump crab cakes served with a side salad or a choice of two sides. All crab cakes are market price.

The first thing you notice is an awesome crab smell coming from the crab cake before you. The cake is of the saucy variety, holding the crab together with mayonnaise and spices, with a little bit of bread mixed in. The crab is in large lumps with a few broken pieces.

This crab cake is awesome! The crab meat is nice and sweet, and the binder gives a nice bread and Old Bay flavor. The roll is very good as well, providing great flavor without masking the flavor of the crab cake. Everything works together in perfect proportion. The only thing we had some opinions about was the firmness of the roll. It could be a little less bulbous, and a bit firmer, as the crab cake likes to squish out of the roll as you try to fit your mouth around it for a bite. Other than that, it's a fantastic crab cake that you should go out and try yourself!
