Luna Del Sea Crab Cake Appetizer Luna Del Sea Crab Cake Appetizer Crab Cake Review

For over 10 years, Luna Del Sea has been entertaining tourists and locals alike with fresh seafood and sizzling steaks. And the location is prime: right on Pratt St near Camden Yards, M&T Bank Stadium, the Convention Center, a good number of the major hotels in the downtown area, and so forth. If you're like us, you've noticed the place many times, but haven't been able to stop in, either because of traffic, time constraints, or the line out the door on a busy night (they do have a pretty nice outdoor seating area). But despite how fancy the establishment appears, the dress code is casual, so feel free to wear your Oriole's orange or Ravens camo. We happened to stop by after a phenomenal Orioles win one night, and checked out one of the specialties of the house -- crab cakes! Check out the review to see what we thought!

First, apologies about the quality of the picture. Dim outdoor lighting and a camera phone do not make for an optimal picture!

As mentioned, crab cakes is one of the specialties of the house. You can get a crab cake as an appetizer like we did, or go for a double platter, or a surf and turf combo. All crab cakes come broiled, and are market price.

The crab cake is Maryland style, which consists primarily of crab meat and bread with some spices mixed in. Crab meat was mostly lumps with not very many broken pieces. Nice bit of moisture to the cake, thanks to the bread that binds it all together.

Overall, the crab cake as a whole had a decent flavor to it. The breading offered supporting flavors to the crab meat, but didn't overpower in any way. And while there was some visible spice in the mix, it wasn't overly pronounced. Which brings us to the crab meat flavor.

The crab had a buttery meaty flavor to it, but not that distinctive sweetness that you'd expect from a high end seafood restaurant. Even worse, the crab meat seemed a bit, well, tired. It was certainly not fresh, and had that distinctive frozen flavor that we've found in some of our frozen crab cake reviews. While there was some breading and spice to try and save the crab, everything came off as monotone near the end.

While this crab cake was better than some and at least conveyed that Maryland crab cake flavor, for the type of location that we were in, it was downright disappointing and certainly overpriced. We only hope that we caught them on an off night, but if we're spending that kind of money on crab cakes, we will certainly be going elsewhere.
