Nick's Fish House is a fairly large establishment, located right on the water in South Baltimore. It's not the easiest place to find as the roads get a little wonky over by the Hanover St. bridge, but once you find it, you won't be disappointed. Open year-round, Nick's has indoor and outdoor seating, water views, cold beer, fresh crabs, and live entertainment. Slips are available if you arrive by boat, or you can just walk over if you arrive by cruise ship. You'd expect a place that knows crabs and seafood to have a stellar crab cake. Were we disappointed? Nick's Fish House offers crab cakes as a side, on a sandwich (including the crab grilled cheese!), or as a platter (single or double). Crab also appears in quite a few other dishes, like the crab pretzel and crab mac and cheese. You'll have to check out the menu for all of the various options. The one thing we will note is that the crab cake as a side is not mentioned on the menu, but ask your server and they'll be more than happy to place your order. The side and the platter are market price, all other options look like they have set prices to them.
Nick's crab cake is a saucy cake made with lots of jumbo lumps of crab held together with breadcrumbs and mayonnaise. Not too many broken pieces in the cake, either! There is some spice in the mix, but it's very light.
We found this crab cake to be simply amazing! The crab tastes super sweet and is very, very tasty. There isn't much spice at all, but with crab meat this good, you won't need it or miss it (although a tiny bit more would make it that much better). Aside from the crab, the only other thing you taste is the breading, which still remains as a background flavor. We highly recommend this crab cake!
