This week, the CCR continues their vacation coverage of Ocean City, MD. A town certainly known for crabs, and where there are crabs, you will find crab cakes. But you'll also find beer. And what better way to enjoy a beer than to go right to the source. That's just what we did when we went to visit the Ocean City Brewing Company. Relatively new to the area, they opened in May 2014 and have enjoyed success since then. The easy formulas are always winners: good beer, good food, good people. Were the crab cakes the perfect accompaniment to their craft beers? Let's find out!
The Ocean City Brewing Company offers crab cakes in the form of a sandwich or a platter, perfectly seasoned, and your choice of broiled or fried. The sandwich comes with lettuce and tomato, tartar sauce, house made Carolina slaw, and house chips; the platter is a single or double, with your choice of 2 sides.
The crab cake is made up of mostly broken up crab meat with a few medium lumps still intact, and a binder of bread, egg, and spices. Just enough binder to hold it all together with proper proportions of crab to binder, yet still keeps the crab cake nice and moist. Doesn't fall apart too easily, yet isn't tightly packed. The seasonings in the binder are generous, to say the least, but still in proper proportion.
As far as the flavor goes, we loved this crab cake! The crab meat is nice and sweet, a nice example of what makes Maryland Blue Crab famous. The spicing is generous, but not over the top. The spicing lets itself be known, but doesn't overpower the crab. The layers of flavors work well together, and definitely linger a bit after the bite, letting you reminisce in what you just had, and making you want to take another bite.
