Pierpoint Smoked Jumbo Lump Crab Cake

Pierpoint Smoked Jumbo Lump Crab Cake (on right) Pierpoint Smoked Jumbo Lump Crab Cake (on right) Crab Cake Review

[Part 2 of 2]  Pierpoint Restaurant opened to rave reviews back in 1989, and continues to receive recognition from various publications.  Their concept is Modern Maryland cuisine with a more healthy approach.  Their signature dish is their smoked crab cake, although they also offer a regular one as well.  How do they fare in this town known for their crab cakes?  Let's find out!

This review is for the smoked Maryland Jumbo Lump crab cake.

All prices are listed as Market Price.  Double platter was ordered with the "one of each" option, but a single is available as well.  Double platter comes with a side of brussel sprout slaw and matchstick fries.  Single platter comes with a Silverqueen corn cake.  At least for the double platter, tartar was spooned onto the plate.  Cocktail was not offered, but being a seafood restaurant it is probably available (I didn't ask).

The smoked crab cake is all crab and binder, with a tiny bit of filler encountered (which was really just a few breadcrumbs, which, from what I found out online, are ground Rtiz crackers).  The binder appeared to be mayo with a touch of mustard, but there wasn't as much of it as with the regular crab cake. The cake is billed as jumbo lump, but by our definition, it ended up being more along the lines of lump due to the amount of broken lumps (although we did encounter one jumbo lump in the smoked crab cake!).

The first thing you notice is the smoked flavor of the crab meat.  This was a very solid crab cake, but not as moist as the regular (regular was described as "saucy", this one is dry in comparison).  No shell or cartilage bits found.  While there is a bit more filler in here than the regular crab cake, you do not taste the filler or binder, just that sweet, smoked crab meat that you've heard so much about.  While the smoked flavor is a tasty diversion from your regular crab cake flavors, I honestly couldn't eat more than one due to the fact that, for me, the smoked flavor would grow tiresome after the first cake.

*Fun fact:  Back in April 2010, while dining at Pierpoint for the first time, the concept of the Crab Cake Review was born.  Show people what they are getting, describe the experience, and inform them of which crab cakes are worth your hard earned dollars.  Thank you Pierpoint for the inspiration!*
