The Riverside Pub & Grille is an upscale sports bar nestled away in a corner off of I-95 at Exit 80 next to the Springhill Suites. It's a small establishment with a few tv's, 3 beers on draft, and a decent selection of wines. Sports memorabilia line the walls of this quaint restaurant. From what we can tell, they've been around for a few years, yet the place looks fairly new. We only happened upon it thanks to an internet search looking for crab cakes in the area. Were they worth the trip? Let's find out!
Riverside offers crab cakes as both a sandwich and an entree. The sandwich is an all lump crab cake on your choice of bread, topped with lettuce and tomato, served with a side of cole slaw or chips. The entree selections are either a double entree or part of the Seafood Platter, which consists of the catch of the day, a crab cake, and your choice of shrimp. Both entrees come with your choice of two sides.
The crab cake is about 5oz in size, and is Maryland style, which features a mayonnaise base and breading for the binder, spices, and a mix of lumps of crab amongst broken and minced pieces. Parsley is added in for color.
Overall, the crab cake wasn't bad. When singled out, the lumps of crab had a meaty texture with some decent flavor. Despite being Maryland style, the crab cake had a bit of sauciness to it, with a good bit of moisture inside. The spice is what really forms our opinion, though.
The crab cake is pretty heavily spiced, so much that it is at the point where the saltiness of the spicing teams up with the breading flavor to overpower most of the other flavors. We really couldn't really taste the crab unless we singled it out. A squeeze of lemon, however, tames the spice and balances everything out. But you shouldn't have to rely on lemon to make your crab cake balanced, let alone taste good. If the spice could get cut back to let the crab come forward, then this might be a worthy crab cake.
