Slices Pizzeria, located in Bel Air Plaza Shopping Center, is devoted to customer service and excellence. Using only the finest ingredients, Slices makes each item fresh and made to order. Pizzerias aren't typical for offering crab cakes, but this is Maryland, so anything is possible! We've had the pizza from Slices before, and it was pretty decent. So follow along with us to see if their crab cakes follow suit!
Slices offers crab cakes as a platter (served with fries and cole slaw), as a sandwich (served on your choice of bread), as a wrap (served with french fries), or as an 8" hot sub. For this review, we went for the sandwich.
The crab cake itself is Maryland style, and made up of mostly broken pieces of crab. All of that crab was bound together with bread, and most likely egg and spices. The amount of breading in the binder was average, although you could really see it on the outside of the crab cake.
On our first bite, we got a bit of fishy tasting crab, which typically indicates that Blue Swimmer crab is mixed in to keep costs down. Not all of the crab was fishy tasting, though, as there was some decent tasting crab meat in the majority of the cake, but the hits of Blue Swimmer here and there ruin it. The spicing used was a bit on the heavy side, and super salty at that. Despite being Maryland style, the cake was leaning towards the dry side and could have used a bit more moisture. The kaiser roll neutralizes the overall flavor a bit without adding any of its own, which kind of helps this crab cake out.
Despite the salt blast from the spice in hopes of covering up the Blue Swimmer taste, this wasn't too bad of a crab cake. The kaiser roll really did tone down the off flavors, but not enough that they didn't linger for a bit. If Slices could tone down the salt (or use a seafood seasoning that wasn't so salt-laden), and not use Blue Swimmer crab in the mix, then we might look a bit more favorable on this crab cake. But for now, you should probably stick to ordering pizzas on your next visit.
