Steelefish Grille Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Steelefish Grille Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Crab Cake Review

Remember Freddies in Bel Air? Sure, we all do. Well, they closed down in April 2013 and sat vacant for quite a while. Then, earlier this year, we saw the Steelefish Grille was going to open in it's place. Members of the Steele family used to be part owners of the old Freddies (as well as the Hickory Lodge down the street). Now they are reopening a new seafood restaurant in its place. Freddie's used to have a really good crab cake, so we had to see if the Steelefish Grille could also deliver. Read on to see what we thought!

Crab cakes are available as a sandwich, entree, or as an addition to a steak to make your own Surf & Turf. The sandwich comes on a brioche with lettuce, tomato, and Chesapeake remoulate, along with a pickle spear and Old Bay potato chips. Entrees are single or double platters, served with baked potato and grilled asparagus.

The crab cake was made up of some large lumps of crab, but mostly really broken up pieces. The binder comes off as a mix of mayonnaise, Dijon, bread crumbs, chopped green onions, and seafood spicing. Not quite creamy, but not quite Maryland style.

Despite the crab meat being really overworked and broken up, it still had some good flavor to it. The seafood spice, on the other hand, really tries to fight for your attention. As for the binder, the mix of mayonnaise and bread crumbs leaves you with a creamy but gritty feel in your mouth.

Sadly, we weren't as impressed as we had hoped to be from a seafood restaurant, especially knowing what we knew about Freddie's crab cake. The crab meat was too overworked, the binder had an off consistency, and the spicing needed to be toned down. The crab flavor really saves it, but with all of the other things going on, we just felt that the end result was average. Hopefully this is more due to the fact that the restaurant just opened and is still working out the staffing kinks.
