Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Alley Cat

The Alley Cat is an interesting establishment to visit, no matter what the time of day is.  During the daytime when things are slow, you can see how this would be one of the local party establishments amongst Northern Virginia locals.  At night, well, I can't really speak of at night, but word around town is that this is one of the most happenin' holes in the walls.

Not really near Old Town, but safely tucked away across from Landmark Mall, they claim to have not only one of the largest kitchens in Alexandria, but also one of the largest dedicated parking lots.  Bold claims, but the place is really big, so I won't doubt them on that.  The one thing that I would put them up to the challenge for is their crab cakes.  "Soon to be world famous!" their menu says.  Are they ready for the world stage?  Follow along and find out!

Open year round, Baldwin's is sure to have something for everyone, although they're best known for their crabs. And where there are crabs, there will be crab cakes. Were they worth the trip? Bayard House

The Bayard House in Chesapeake City, MD has a long standing history. Considered to be the oldest building in town, the original building, which was a manor, was built in the 1780's. It wasn't until 1829 that the location was first used as a public building, being converted to a tavern and an inn (then called Chick's Tavern). Since then, the building has changed owners, at one point in time being sold to a descendent of the original owner. Not until the early 80's did Allaire du Pont purchase the property and restore it, along with much of the village, and can still be seen today. But we didn't turn out for a history lesson. We came for crab cakes! Read on and let us let you know how they were!

If you've been anywhere around the area, you've more than likely come across a Bill Bateman's.  They may be a corporate outlet, an express location, or a franchise.  What started out as a single location on Harford Road back in 1987 has exploded into multiple locations around the area.  Mostly known for their wings, they do have a wide variety of items on their menu.  The big banner advertising Crab Cake Night caught our eye, and we just had to stop in.  Should you go with the cakes, or stick with the wings?  Let's find out!

You may be more familiar with Little Italy when it comes to Italian restaurants in Baltimore. But up in Bel Air, the Buentempo Brothers provide a slice of Little Italy in Harford County. Located in the heart of Main Street, Buentempo Brothers has been knocking out their famous pizzas since 1991. Fresh dough and great customer service are only part of what makes this place special. So with great Italian food, we were excited to see crab cakes on the menu. Are they as good as the pizza? Let's find out!
