Mt Washington Tavern

The Mt. Washington Tavern has been around since 1979, priding themselves on serving a stiff drink with a heavy hand, and providing a comfortable neighborhood eatery.  Declared a historic landmark, the interior of the tavern is filled with artwork and decorations that honor their local heritage.  You could easily get lost in this place, as there is a connected maze of unique rooms throughout the tavern (after passing through the bar area with the carved wood, you wouldn't expect the back garden room).  Always having stuck to drinks during any visit, we decided it was time to give their food a shot.  How did their crab cakes hold up to expectation?  Let's find out!

Obrycki's Deviled Crab Cake

[Part 2 of 2] The Crab Cake Review starts its site off with a visit to Obrycki's in Upper Fells Point.  Since 1944, Obrycki's has been serving up crabs with their own special seasoning blend, along with other seafood treats.  When asking where to go for crab cakes in Baltimore, one might be pointed over in this direction.  But is it worth the trip?  Let's find out.

Phillips Harborplace

Looking past Faidley's and G&M, the one name that has been synonymous with Maryland crabs/seafood is Phillips.  Since 1956, Phillips has been churning out seafood for Maryland tourists, starting out in Ocean City, MD and branching out to not only multiple locations in Maryland (Baltimore, Rockville, and Ocean City), but along the Mid Atlantic seaboard as well (Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Washington DC, Myrtle Beach).  In addition to sit-down restaurants, they also operate seafood buffets, express stands and airport locations as well as grocery/retail and foodservice divisions.  Certainly anyone with this kind of success, especially in an area known for its seafood, specifically crabs, must certainly know what they are doing.  The sign outside of their Baltimore location boasts "Maryland's Favorite Crab Cake".  But is it?  Continue on to find out!

Pizza Boli's Old Bay Crab Pizza

We'll bet you didn't know that Pizza Boli's started over 25 years ago up in the Baltimore neighborhood of Mount Washington.  Nowadays, they have over 70 stores in the MD, VA, PA and DC area, being voted best pizza by the Washingtonian Magazine, and touting that they offer more product variety than any other major pizza chain.  They are also innovators in recyclable container technology with their SmartBox pizza boxes.  Along with that, one of their newest pizza offerings is the Old Bay Crab Pizza.  Being a Baltimore company, one is going to probably assume that they know a thing or two about crabs.  (Isn't that usually the case?)  So how did their newest pizza offering turn out?  Let's find out!

RD's American Grill

Every now and again, the CCR likes to venture out past its normal territory to see how crab cakes are interpreted by our neighboring counties/states. On a recent trip to Lancaster, we happened upon a small roadside restaurant: RD's American Grill. Opened in 2013, RD's focuses on traditional American comfort food and BBQ. While slow cooked meats is usually one way to grab our attention, the inclusion of crab cakes on the menu is the clincher. So one night we decided to stop on by and check them out.
