Pappas Crab Melt
Last week we reviewed Pappas Jumbo Lump Crab Cake at the repeated request of our friends. And it was very good! Their menu had lots of crab options on it, so we coudln't just leave it at the crab cake. So while we were there, we took it upon ourselves to see how the Crab Melt stood up to the glory of their regular crab cake. Read on to find out how things went down!
Pappas Crab Melt is essentially a crab cake topped with cheese, served on an open-faced grilled English muffin, and served with chips and a pickle (regardless of lunch or dinner).
As per our thoughts on the crab cake on its own, the colossial lumps of crab meat had a big, meaty flavor with a little bit of sweetness. The binder didn't provide much flavor unless you hit a large proportion of it in the mix, as it did have a tendency to get a bit saucy in some places. We didn't detect much spice in the crab cake mix, but there are shakers of Pappas' own crab seasoning on the table that you can add on your own.
The crab melt on a whole was just average. The cheese is nice and melty, and the English muffin is nicely toasted and buttered. But the muffin adds too much starch to the mix, and took away from the meaty crab flavor. Maybe if the crab cake had more spice to it, then it would counteract the muffin flavor. True, you can shake on your own spice, but it just doesn't seem the same as if it was cooked into the cake so it can meld in with the other flavors.
