Alexander's Tavern
Alexander's Tavern is a neighborhood bar located in the historic Fells Point section of Baltimore. You may get confused by which door to go into (one goes into the restaurant, the other goes into the bar area), but that shouldn't stop you from coming in. You may not know by looking at the place, but they've won numerous awards, from a "Best of" from FourSquare in the Food category, to 3rd Best Pub by Baltimore Magazine Readers in 2012. If the happy hour specials won't pull you in, then the astounding selection of tots will. But knowing us, we're all about the crab cakes with a side of tots. So we checked out Alexander's one day to check out how they were. Read along to see how our visit went!
Alexander's Maryland Crab Cakes are available as a single or double entree, served with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and tartar sauce, along with warm bread and butter upon request. Also available is a sandwich topped with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce on a brioche bun, and your choice of tater tots, fries, salad, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, apples, refried beans, or chips and salsa. For our review, we opted for the sandwich with a side of tots. Because, really, who doesn't love tots?
The crab cake is made up of mostly crab meat, bound together by bread and seasoning, with a hint of Dijon. While they are called Maryland Crab Cakes, they aren't the standard Maryland style that you would expect. The amount of bread is lighter, but it's not a very saucy crab cake. That said, the moisture level was perfect, and the bread was in good proportion to the crab meat.
As for the crab itself, the flavor is nice and sweet. Lots of Old Bay in the mix, which makes it a bit salty, but with the crab being super sweet, everything just works well together. The brioche holds up well, and has a good amount of give and take in it's firmness, which keeps the cake from squishing out from the sides as you take a bite. The spice lingers a bit afterwards, but you can still taste the crab. The crab cake makes for a fantastic sandwich, but can also be just as good on it's own.
The only thing holding this back from being an outstanding crab cake is the amount of spice in the mix. While you can still taste the crab, the amount of spice comes off as a bit too salty, like someone went a bit crazy with the Old Bay. That's not to say that it's still not good, as we certainly couldn't stop eating it. But a little less spice would elevate this crab cake to the levels that it deserves.
