Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Big Fish Grille

If you live in the Crofton area, then you already know the Big Fish Grille.  Perhaps you have passed by it on the way to a Baysox game, or in your travels up and down Route 3.  The Big Fish Grille is the place along the road that looks like an old Bubba Gump shrimp shack, complete with a big, goofy fish sign.  While owned by the same group that runs Buddy's, Red Sky, and Yellowtail, this is a local establishment.  And with half off appetizers and bottles of wine during their happy hour, you may want to look past the kitsch and stop on in.  But before you do, I'm sure you want to know about the crab cakes.  Never fear, we are here to let you know!  So read on and see how they turned out!

The single jumbo lump crab cake entree is broiled and served with a baked potato and steamed vegetable.  The double entree comes with lobster orzo risotto and steamed asparagus.  Also on the menu are jumbo lump crab cake sliders, served with sweet corn remoulade on potato rolls and a side of chips.  On the appetizer menu are 4 mini jumbo lump crab cakes which are baked and served with sweet corn remoulade.  Entrees come with tartar sauce, no lemon wedge (be sure to ask for one if you prefer lemon).

The crab cakes are mostly crab, although a few pieces were a bit broken and soggy.  This is a very saucy cake.  Not overly spicy, either.  A little Dijon, Worcestershire sauce, and lots of bread crumbs and mayonnaise.  The crab has a decent amount of flavor, but not as much as you would expect.  The consistency of the sauce makes it a bit pasty in texture, and the amount of it tends to let the texture override the crab flavor.  Spicing is a bit on the bland side, as the binding/filler acts as the spicing.  Less binder would certainly make this a much better crab cake, but it is still worthwhile.  The crab cake is fairly sizable, so unless you are really hungry, the single entree should be enough for most.
