Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Blue Dolphin Seafood Bar and Grill

The Blue Dolphin is a large, expansive operation consisting of multiple dining areas, a bar, and an event hall.  Serving modern American cuisine in an ornately decorated restaurant.  Definitely the place in the Crofton/Gambrills area to bring a large group as the seating is plentiful and the menu is expansive.  Although a bit on the pricey side, this is certainly where you spend your big night out if you're in the 'burbs.

So while gazing over the menu selections, you will take note of the "famous" crab cakes.  While your eye may start to wander and drool over the steaks and other seafood offerings, if you are anything like the CCR, you can't help but wonder just how good are the crab cakes?  Friend of the CCR, Cheryl, even wrote in saying how much she liked their crab cakes and recommended them to us.  (Of course, this was a day or two after I had already been there, but it's the thought that counts!)  How did they rate in the world of crab cakes?  Read along and find out!

Crab cake dinner comes in single and double varieties with two sides, bread and butter, and tartar, cocktail and lemon on as well.  There is also a crab ball appetizer on the menu.  Crab cakes also come in sandwich form, served on bread with fries and cole slaw.

First, I have to warn you, these cakes are HUGE!  We are talking G&M sized.  And like G&M, these cakes are very saucy with an eggy texture and flavor.  The crab meat itself has a decent flavor, but there are some colossal lumps mixed in there that were reminiscent of the blue swimmer crab (not to be confused with the Maryland blue crab, as the blue swimmer usually lacks flavor).

Because of the amount of sauce, the egg flavor/texture serves as a distraction from the crab, which often gets lost in the gelatinous sauce which becomes more flan-like as the cake cools.  The cake could use a little more spice, like some Old Bay, to give the flavor a bit more complexity other than crab and egg.  Also, the amount of sauce can be dialed back as the firming of the sauce does get to be off-putting.
