Bo Brooks

So you may have asked yourself at one point, "Was there really a Bo Brooks?" Well, the answer is yes, kind of. Bo was a nickname, but he and two partners opened Bo Brooks in the East Baltimore neighborhood of Gardenville back in 1964. Bo no longer runs the restaurant, with the current owners having run the place since 1985. But they did move to Canton back in 2000, bringing their crab expertise down to the waterfront. With all of this history, we just had to put a rest to the question, "Does Bo know crabs?" Let's find out!

Bo Brooks offers crab cakes as a sandwich, topped with lettuce, tomato, and fried pickles, served alongside french fries; or as a double entree. We're not sure if any sides come with the entree, as they weren't indicated on the menu, and all sides were listed as a la carte.

Bo's jumbo lump crab cake is just that -- jumbo lumps of crab, lightly bound together with egg, breadcrumbs, and spices, broiled. The lumps of crab weren't too broken up, and everything was bound together with the least amount of binder possible. The bun for the sandwich is a potato bread bun, toasted on the insides.

The crab meat flavor was excellent. Sweet and flavorful, just like you would expect from a well-known crab house. The binder flavor was neutral, and the spicing waited until the back end to make itself known. Even the bun had a nice flavor to it that didn't impede on the crab flavor. The only drawback we had was that the crab meat on the outside of the cake got a bit dried out from cooking, but the inside was nice and moist.

No matter which way you go, sandwich or entree, we don't think you'll be disappointed with Bo Brooks' crab cakes. While the focus is mostly on the flavor of the crab, the binder and spicing did a really good job of accentuating with out overpowering. As a sandwich, the cake even held it's own. While some of the cake started to ooze out of the bun while we ate, it didn't fall apart and make a mess of the plate. Despite the dry crab on the edges of the cake, we still think you'll enjoy it!
