Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Costa's Inn

Open since 1971 and Zagat rated since 1999, Costa's Inn is certainly a Baltimore institution. For over 40 years, the Costas family has been serving up some of Baltimore's finest seafood and pit beef. But don't take our word for it. Check out all of the awards they've won as you walk into the restaurant. Year after year, Costa's has been voted the best of something, whether it's for their seafood, crab cakes, or pit beef. So do the crab cakes live up to the hype and legendary status after all these years? Follow along and find out!

Crab cakes are available as a 5oz or 1/2 lb appetizer, a double entree, part of a surf and turf combo, or as a sandwich. Side offerings differ, so check the menu at the restaurant or online. Our review is for the 5oz. appetizer.

The crab cake contains large lumps of crab, along with some broken pieces, held together with a primary mixture of bread and mayonnaise. The focus is on the crab, so there is just enough binder to hold all those pieces of crab together. The binder has a bready texture, and carries a muted flavor that sets the stage for that sweet crab flavor. While some spice is mixed in, it is used just as an accent, and hardly noticeable in comparison to the crab and binder.

Overall, we thought this was an awesome crab cake! With the sweet flavor of the crab shining through, each bite is a flavor explosion in your mouth, and you can't wait for that next bite. It could use a bit more spice to bump up the flavor profile a bit. And there are shakers of seafood seasoning at each table, but it's a bit salty, so you only need a tiny bit. Add that with some lemon, and you'll wish you chose the double entree over the appetizer.

As a side note, a smart move is to choose the appetizer then go with either a pit sandwich (the combo ham/beef is amazing) or one of the other amazing menu items.
