Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Crab Cake Cafe

The Crab Cake Cafe brings a new twist to a Maryland favorite.  Located across from Annapolis High School, this establishment combines the tradition of Maryland crab with different flavors found around the country.  Everything is made fresh on the premise from scratch, ensuring the best flavor and highest quality.  Their slogan says it all "Local flavors....twisted".  Crab cake flavor inspirations come from places such as Texas, Hawaii, and New Orleans.  But fret not, the Maryland classic is still available, which is where we decided to start.  Do they truly capture the flavor of the Chesapeake?  Let's read on and find out!

In addition to a wide variety of menu items other than crab cakes, all crab cakes are served in sandwich form and all have the same price point.  All sandwiches come with your choice of signature fries, sweet potato fries, or cole slaw.  The Traditional and Shrimp and Crab come with tartar, lettuce and tomato.  All others have their own unique toppings, so check the menu to see what you're in the mood for.

The traditional crab cake is made of jumbo lump crab meat, loosely held together by a mayonnaise base, mixed with spices.  There may be a tiny bit of breadcrumbs in there as well, and if there are, they are not noticeable at all.

The crab meat has a nice, sweet flavor to it.  Definitely what we look for when we think of Chesapeake Bay crabs.  The binder gives off a light, fresh flavor.  The amount of spice is light, but noticeable.  Everything frames the crab flavor nicely.

The roll is fresh baked and is one of the best rolls we've ever had with a crab cake.  It's not too hard that you can't bite into it without squishing the cake, and not too soft that you have a hard time holding everything together.  And it's at the right thickness that allows the cake to be the thickest part of the sandwich, but is big enough to make a presence.  Really, just perfectly done.

The crab cake works well alone or as part of the sandwich.  But with everything in such perfect balance, you'll want to eat it as a sandwich.  So go pay them a visit, and make a point to try all of their twisted crab cakes!
