Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Don's Crabs

We could make a stupid dad joke here about Don and his crabs. But we're not. Instead, we're going to talk to you about Don and his crabs. Since 1973, Don's Crabs has been serving fresh, local seafood year round. With locations in Parkville and Bel Air, they're close by! Just plan on eating them elsewhere, because both locations are carry out. Read on and see what we thought about Don's crab cakes!

Don's Crabs sells jumbo lump crab cakes in both 4oz and 6oz. Check out their menu to see the various ways their kitchen can serve you crab cakes. We opted to buy them raw and cook them at home. For the review, we went with the 6oz crab cakes and cooked them at 375 for 15-20 minutes.

Don's crab cakes bind jumbo lumps of crab with a mayonnaise-based binder, spices, and some possible breadcrumbs. Spicing is light, but certainly noticeable. Breadcrumbs are also sparingly used, if used at all.

The promise of fresh, local seafood certainly makes its way to the crab cakes! Crab meat is high quality and super sweet. Spice hits on the back end as a nice afterthought, and the rest of the binder just does its job holding the crab together without giving off too much flavor. Which is fine by us! With crab this good, you don't mind the spice levels.

The one thing you will mind, however, is the amount of shelling in the crab meat. We ended up picking out more than we thought was appropriate, so the crab meat could be cleaned better. Even then, it's just a small matter that resulted in us taking off half a star. Yes, the crab cakes are that good.  Don't believe us? Try them for yourself!
