Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Double T Diner

The Double T is a 50's style diner with 8 locations around the Baltimore area, half of which are open 24 hours a day. Back in 1959, partners Tony and Thomas opened the first Double T, which was then sold to the current owners in 1997. At the diner, you'll find more than just breakfast -- they serve everything from breakfast, salads, sandwiches, crab cakes, pastas, and Greek specialties. Wait, what? Diner crab cakes? That's what we said, but that is also what intrigued us to stop by and check them out. Read along to find out how they were!

The Double T offers crab cakes as either a sandwich or an entree. The sandwich is fried or broiled, and served on your choice of bread with lettuce, tomato, and fries. The entree comes with soup or salad, potato, and a vegetable. Interestingly enough, the sandwich has a fixed price, whereas the entree is market price. Either way, you'll get asked if you want tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, or mayonnaise, and if you ordered the sandwich, if you want your bread toasted.

At first sight, our expectations were blown away. Diners aren't typically known for gourmet food, so the fact that this mound of jumbo lump crab was sitting in front of us was impressive. Honestly, we expected something of lesser quality. The crab cake is made with large lumps of crab, very few broken pieces, and held together with what we think to be breading, egg, and light spices. It's not Maryland style that is heavy on the breading, but it's not a saucy cake, either.

This crab cake means business! The large lumps of crab are sweet and meaty, and the binder has a light spice to it to accentuate the crab. On the whole, the cake has a great flavor, with a slight hint of yellow mustard on the back end. We attempted to eat this as a sandwich, but it didn't quite work out so well with slices of sandwich bread. But that's really the only thing that we could find wrong with this crab cake, especially at this price point.
