Dudas Tavern
The CCR has descended upon a well-known watering hole in Fells Point called Duda's Tavern. Small and cozy, you wouldn't think that they would serve really decent food, let alone crab cakes. Part of the Fells Point Haunted PubWalk, there is a great deal of history in this tavern. So how do their crab cakes stack up? Read on to find out!
Tuesdays is 1/2 price crab cake night. Price paid included side of fries which are extra, as the single platter by default is served with potato chips. (But why pass up the opportunity to have some Old Bay fries?) All crab cake prices are at market price, so the price you pay will vary from mine, as well as from visit to visit.
Single platter is available on bread (i.e. crab cake sandwich) or with crackers, served with potato chips. Double platter allows you to choose 2 sides.
Spice is minimal to non-existent. Lots of large lumps of crab do the talking, with the occasional bread crumb or two. No mention of other cooking styles, but it's a small kitchen and with being a neighborhood bar, you can try and ask them if they will broil it, but I've never attempted that before and couldn't tell you what the answer will be (maybe something to ask on another visit and report back on). Old Bay is available in shakers at the table (as well as the large restaurant size shaker at the bar) along with a wide variety of hot sauces, if you want to spice it up. But the spicing works well with the sweetness of the crab, which really stands out.
Overall, a really solid crab cake. If you are paying full price for it, then you may think it is a bit on the small side compared to other places. But with the fantastic beer selection, daily specials during the week, and laid back neighborhood bar feel, it is quite possibly the best crab cake in Fells Point, and one of the top in the city.
