Joe Squared
Joe Squared is better known for their pizzas than their crab cakes. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, voted Maryland's best pizza, and named one of the best pizza places in the nation by both Food Network Magazine and Food Nation, it is certainly one place you can't miss when you visit Baltimore. Now with two locations (Power Plant Live! and North Avenue), Joe Squared is the place to go for a family friendly atmosphere, live music, and an extensive food and drink list. But pizzas are pizzas, and crab cakes are crab cakes. So how did Joe do? Read along and see for yourself!
Joe Squared's crab cake is available in sandwich format, and comes in two sizes. The sandwich consists of a crab cake, dill, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and tartar sauce. Served on a fresh ciabatta roll with a small salad, or you can sub fries for $1. This review is for the small size and tartar sauce withheld, at the Power Plant Live! location.
For a crab cake, we didn't really detect too much crab in the sandwich. One could consider it Maryland style, but really, there was more filler than average present in the cake. That said, what crab was in there was pretty decently sized lumps. Mixed in with the crab was bread and spices.
Despite the amount of filler, this was a really good crab cake! It may not be able to stand alone outside of a sandwich, but considered as a whole, it was very tasty. The crab flavor holds its own against the condiments. The ciabatta roll is out of this world. Bready, firm, and buttered. Mmmmm.....butter. Aside from the amount of filler, the only other real marks against this sandwich would be that the bread is a bit too firm, causing the crab cake to squeeze out of the bread as you bite down. But once you taste the flavor of the roll, you really won't mind that one bit.
