Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Kent Island Crab Cakes

Kent Island Crab Cakes is a mail order seafood company located in, where else, but Kent Island, MD. A family-run business since the early 1980's, Kent Island Crab Cakes strives to exclusively use Blue Crab meat from the Chesapeake Bay. While crab cakes are their main attraction, they offer much more than that. They also sell a wide variety of seafood delights, delicious soups (both the Vegetable Crab and Cream of Crab are excellent!), meats, and desserts. While we might get distracted by a Smith Island cake, we're here for the crab cakes. So we placed an order for our holiday dinner and invited the family over. Read on to find out what we thought!

Kent Island Crab Cakes offers crab cakes in all varieties, sizes, and combinations, so be sure to check out their website to see what they currently offer. This review is for the Colossal Crab Cakes, which are 6 ounce crab cakes made with  jumbo lump crab, mayo, fresh bread crumbs, egg, bay country seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard powder, and dry parsley flakes.  Shipped frozen, we thawed ours in fridge for an hour, then baked at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

The first thing you notice are the large lumps of crab used to make up the cake, bound together Maryland style, so it's on the breadier side. As once would expect from Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab, the crab flavor was excellent and unmistakable. The binder, while mellow in flavor, was tasty but not overpowering. While the focus is on the crab flavor itself, we felt that the profile could have been rounded out a bit more by adding a bit more spice to the mix. That small niggle aside, we felt that these were excellent crab cakes and are definitely ones that you should try!

Our one recommendation would be to make sure the crab cakes have fully defrosted before cooking them. The one hour defrost time in the instructions is merely a suggestion, and while your experience may vary, we found that we needed a little longer for ours to fully defrost. Plan accordingly.
