Laurrapin Grille
What exactly is a laurrapin? According to their website, this is an Appalachian or Southern term commonly used to describe tasty "po' folk foods", and goes on to further describe the term as "being over the top in delectable flavor, seasoning, and texture....a memorable meal". Since 2001, this restaurant has been churning culinary delights featuring locally grown products, being one small business that supports other small businesses. They take pride in the source of their food, and their menu invites you to meet their farmers. So with so much expectation in deliciousness, one would expect the crab cakes to be nothing short of spectacular. How did they hold up? Let's find out!
The Laurrapin Grille has crab cakes available as an appetizer, sandwich, and as a single or double entree. The appetizer is served with a garnish of greens, the sandwich is served with your choice of fries or salad, and the dinner entree is served with the chef's choice of seasonal starch and vegetables, and is dressed with a lobster béchamel. For this review, we went with the appetizer.
The crab cake consists of lump crab meat lightly bound together and seasoned with Old Bay. The binder is Maryland style, using bread and Dijon to bring it all together. There are additional spices added to the Old Bay, like black pepper, that add depth of flavor to your crab cake experience.
We were very impressed with this crab cake, everything was nearly perfect. The crab meat is mostly smaller lumps and broken pieces, but still maintains that signature Maryland Blue sweetness. The binder is in perfect proportion to the crab meat, not getting too heavy on the bread, and maintaining a good amount of moisture. The spicing is peppery on the back end, and the Dijon adds a nice little kick as well, but only ever so slightly. Everything is just right, so what are you waiting for? Jump on the boat to Flavor Town!
