Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Lewnes' Steakhouse

Lewnes' Steakhouse is an upscale steakhouse in the Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis, serving only the finest U.S. Prime aged beef, amongst other tasty treats.  While there have been many renovations and ownership changes throughout the years, the location as a business dates back to the early 1900's.

To walk past this establishment, you may never think twice about what lies inside.  From the outside, you can really only see the bar area.  But step inside and ask for a table, and you'll be whisked away to a cozy booth with white tablecloths.  And that is where your experience begins.  But they're not just all about steaks.  They also offer crab cakes.  Should you choose between one or the other?  Let's see if we can't help you decide!

The jumbo lump crab cakes are offered as an entree, with jumbo lump crab balls available as an appetizer.  Wanting both steak and cake, the CCR managed to get a filet and crab cake combo, as seen in the picture.  The price in the Additional Info field reflects the price of the crab cake as an add-on.  Prices are listed as Market Price.  Crab cake is served with lemon and cocktail sauce.

The crab cake is a Maryland style crab cake, which is heavier on the breading than normal.  Crab lumps are fairly broken up, but still retain some lumpage to it.  Bread filler is mixed in with some of the usual suspects as binder and spicing (mayo, Old Bay, etc.).

The crab cake is moist and tasty.  While the texture is bready, the crab and breading mix work well together.  One doesn't outshine the other, and the resulting flavor is quite nice, with just a slight hint of Old Bay.  Flavor is consistent throughout.  Could use a bit more spice to it, although this is the off season.  So a more flavorful crab that is in season would negate the need for additional spice.  Otherwise, a very tasty crab cake.
