Lures
Lures is a local watering hole that prides itself on its extensive craft beer selection and regional cuisine, and has been around since 2008. They were even voted Best Hidden Gem by the Annapolis What's Up? Mag in 2011 (and we also reviewed their Chesapeake Chachos back in October 2011). Just glance around the place, and you'll wonder what they love more -- beer or fishing. The two naturally go hand-in-hand, so for now we'll call it even. But where there is beer and fish, there are crab cakes. And Lures provides. How were they? Let's find out!
Lures' crab cake sandwich is available fried or sauteed, served with fries or homemade potato chips, either choice sprinkled with Old Bay. Tartar sauce is served on the sandwich, along with lettuce and tomato. A double platter is served as an entree, and is served with seasonal vegetables and loaded mashed potatoes. This review is for the sandwich, sans tartar.
The crab meat is in lumps and broken pieces, bound together by mayonnaise and breadcrumbs, mixed with a small amount of spices. Crab meat isn't overly flavorful -- it tastes somewhat meaty, but a faint flavor. You mostly taste the breadcrumbs, and those aren't really jumping off the wall with flavor, either.
The cake by itself had a very muted flavor, and only tastes a little bit like a crab cake should. Could use more spice. Given the amount of Old Bay they sprinkle on everything, you'd think some of it to go into the crab cake. As a sandwich, everything blends together nicely. The roll and breadcrumb binder both have a similar flavor, so it's that and the flavor of the tomato that are the predominate flavors. The roll is good for crab cakes, we only wish the crab cake had more flavor.
Given that most of their other menu items are super delicious, maybe they had an off day with this mixture. We suppose a repeat vist is in order, if not for their excellent selection of draft beers. And if you're not in the mood for crab cakes, then give the tenderloin sliders a whirl!
