Marchionda's
Marchionda's is a family-owned and operated fine Italian restaurant in the Parkville section of Baltimore. Looking on a map, it may seem like it's in a familiar section. If you thought that, then you'd be right! Marchionda's is in the same location where Angelina's used to be in July of 2013. It's certainly not what the place used to be, with a fresh makeover that brings some class without being overly fancy. It's what dinner out should be like. And Marchionda's continues the tradition of crab cakes started by the former tenants. Do they live up to the tradition? Let's find out!
Marchionda's offers crab cakes for both lunch and dinner. The lunch offering is a 6oz jumbo lump crab cake sandwich, broiled or fried, and served on crackers or bread with lettuce, tomato, tartar sauce, hand cut fries, and a pickle. Dinner provides a single 8oz jumbo lump crab cake, broiled, and served with parmesan roasted potatoes, broccolini, and tartar sauce with lemon.
The crab cake is certainly packed with crab! Good ratio of large lumps and smaller, broken lumps. Binder appears to be mayonnaise-based mixed with breading and spices. Binder is light on the breading, and you can visibly see the spices on the outer crust. We went with for lunch and opted for broiled on crackers. The cracker is actually a half inch piece of round, dense toast.
While the texture of the crab meat was more on the meaty side, it still retained a good amount of sweetness. The flavor of the binder is neutral, with the spice kicking the flavor profile up on the back end that accentuated the crab flavor well. The cracker really didn't add much to the mix other than to give the crab cake a pedestal to sit on. All in all, a very delicious crab cake that we wanted to keep eating more of!
