Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Mo's Seafood

Mo's Seafood is no stranger to the CCR. In fact, Mo's Crab and Pasta Factory was one of our very first reviews. Just in case you're not familiar, Mo's Seafood has been serving quality seafood in the Baltimore area for more than 25 years. There are 5 locations around the area, with a 6th coming to White Marsh. Despite our experience at the Factory with the backfin crab cakes, friend of the CCR, Donna F, had enthusiastically urged us to go to Mo's back in 2012. So it was finally time to revisit Mo's at a different location. Was it worth the trip? Let's find out!

With multiple locations around the area, the menu offerings may differ, so check Mo's website to see if a particular restaurant has what you're looking for. At the Towson location, where this review took place, crab cakes were all over the menu. We had the backfin crab cakes at the Crab and Pasta Factory in Little Italy, so this time around we were focused on the jumbo lump crab cakes. The entrees are listed as 'small' and 'large', which really just equate to 'single' or 'double'. The crab cake entree comes with your choice of one side and bread, along with crackers, a lemon wedge, and tartar sauce.

This crab cake is huge! At a whopping 10oz, we're really glad we went with the single (which is on special on Tuesdays!). The cake consists of a good amount of jumbo crab lumps, mixed in with broken pieces and binder. As far as we could tell, the binder is primarily breading and egg mixed with spices and parsley for coloring.

The end result is a very moist cake with some good flavor to it and a smooth, creamy texture. The crab has a decent sweetness to it, and the binder imparts a neutral breadiness to the mix. Everything is held together well, and easily breaks apart with your fork. Eat carefully, though, as we had a good bit of crab cartilage in our cake.

Despite our past experiences, we really liked Mo's jumbo lump crab cake! The crab was good, and there were plenty of large chunks in the mix. The only downfall that we could see is that it lacks spice. With the crab and binder alone, the flavor gets to be a bit one note after the 4th or 5th bite. If the cakes were smaller, then we'd be done before we ever noticed. But being a larger cake, the lack of a bold flavor profile becomes apparent.  Luckily, there are shakers of seafood seasoning at the table which, after a few shakes, perks things up to where they should be.

Our only other complaint would be on the amount of crab cartilage in the cake. One or two pieces is expected (but not normal), however there were far too many to go without comment. Some things are unavoidable, but this is by far the most we've come across in a crab cake.
