Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Red Brick Station

The Red Brick Station is a restaurant and brewpub located in The Avenue at White Marsh. Independently owned and operated, they strive to provide their guests with creative, English style dishes and English style beers. While the inside is large and accommodating, the outside covered deck is where you want to be in the warmer months. But we're not here just for the beer. We're also looking to see how an English style pub fares with their crab cakes! Read on to see how they did!

Red Brick offers crab cakes as a sandwich topped with lettuce, tomato, and your choice of cole slaw or fries on the side. Also available is an entree with two choices of fries, vegetable of the day, or cole slaw. Your server will ask if you'd like cocktail or tartar sauce.  All crab cakes are made with jumbo lump crab meat, Dijon mustard, and Old Bay.

The crab cake is composed of jumbo lump crab where half the cake is large lumps, and the other half is broken pieces and breadcrumbs. Definitely a Maryland style cake, but with a nice bit of moisture to it. All that crab is held together with a blend of Old Bay, Dijon mustard, and breadcrumbs.

The crab has a decent flavor to it, being more on the meaty side than sweet, but still decent for the price point. The binder has a bit of a mealy texture to it, kind of like how bread crumbs look. But the flavor of the binder accentuates the crab flavor nicely. We couldn't really taste the Dijon at first, but the Old Bay is certainly there in hints.

As a sandwich, the potato roll tends to overpower the flavor of the crab cake, but overall is very good. The looseness of the cake, however, makes it hard to eat as a sandwich, as it squishes out from the sides of the bun as you eat, and is a bit hard to pick up as the roll isn't very firm.

Overall, the Red Brick Station's crab cake wasn't bad, but wasn't all that memorable, either. With the sandwich, we'd really like to see a firmer roll that isn't as overpowering. As for the crab cake itself, it could use a bit more spice, less breadcrumb, and, if possible, better tasting crab.
