Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Ryleigh's Oyster

Ryleigh's Oyster started out in Federal Hill as a relaxed oyster bar with upscale cuisine. They pride themselves on making everything from scratch each day, using quality seasonal and local ingredients that support sustainability and local farmers. Recently they expanded to a second location in Hunt Valley, so we decided to check it out and see what they can do with local ingredients. Read on to see how it went!

Crab cakes have their own section on the menu, offering two choices. The Crab Cake Sandwich serves a crab cake on a brioche bun, with hand cut chips and a side of tartar sauce. The Entree is a presumably double entree (given the price point), served with hand cut fries, cucumber and onion salad, and a side of tartar sauce. All crab cakes are prepared pan sautéed in an Eastern Shore style.

What was served to us was a fairly saucy crab cake, made up of mostly broken lumps of crab, although a few large lumps were still intact. The crab was loosely bound together with a mayonnaise and mustard base, with a healthy serving of seafood seasoning mixed in. While not mentioned on the menu, our sandwich did come topped with some romaine lettuce.

The crab meat was nice and sweet, but you had to single out the crab in order to taste it. The mustard in the binder pretty much overpowered everything. And we mean everything. The lettuce, any of the spices in the crab cake, the bun itself. Everything. It was like eating a really expensive mustard salad sandwich. Which is a shame because the crab meat was good quality and had nice flavor.

As a sandwich, this was really hard to eat. The crab cake itself was really saucy, so when you try to pick up the bun or take a bite, the cake just falls apart. If you're up for a taste test, you might want to choose the entree over the sandwich, or just ask for it bunless. Although the bun was pretty tasty, so perhaps just ask for it on the side.
