Schultz's Crab House Jumbo Lump Crab Cake
Schultz's Crab House is a Baltimore landmark that dates back to 1950. When Schultz's first moved into their current building, it housed three separate storefornts: the bar, a spaghetti carry-out, and an appliance store. After knocking down some walls and moving some things around, Schultz's Lounge was in business. The Lounge operated as a barroom only until 1969, when the liquor license was sold to the current owners, who then renamed the business to what we know it as today. With all of this history, in addition to the business' longevity, we would expect them to know a thing or two about crab cakes. Read on to see how our adventure was!
The menu at Shultz's Crab House seems to be half crab cakes in some form or another. Just about any way you would want them (combo, platter, appetizer, etc.) is surely on the menu. They also offer two types of crab cakes: jumbo lump and backfin. Jumbo lump crab cakes are only offered broiled, whereas the backfin crab cakes are available broiled or fried. This review is for the jumbo lump crab cakes.
Jumbo lump crab cakes at Schultz's are certainly what they say they are -- 6 oz. of jumbo lump! Lots of large lumps of crab bound together with a creamy binder of mayonnaise and bread crumbs. Spices round out the ingredients, with parsley mixed in for color.
The crab meat has more of a meaty texture and flavor to it, but still retains a bit of sweetness to it. The lumps are a bit uniform so they're probably from crabs picked at a packing plant, as opposed to picking their own in house. The binder has enough consistency to fill in the gaps, yet allow the crab cake to break apart very easily when you put a fork to it.
We were a little leery of the price point these crab cakes were at, but what we got made it seem like a bargain. Crab flavor was good, and while the lumps were more on the meaty side, they still had some decent flavor. The binder flavor and spice mixture accentuate the flavor of the crab well, and kept things interesting the whole way through. If you're ever around Essex and have a hankering for some crab cakes, definitely give Schultz's a try!
