Shoreline Seafood Regular Backfin Crab Cake
Shoreline Seafood has been a local area landmark since 1981, providing fresh seafood for sale as well as food for carryout. While the building isn't much to look at, walk inside and you'll experience an unexpected seafood market. Everything from crabs to a wide assortment of fish to clams, mussels, and other fish you never thought you'd come face to face with. Certain items can be steamed onsite, or you can take it home and cook it yourself. They do have steamers and seasonings available for sale, in case you decide to do some work yourself. Carryout items cover a wide range of seafood delicacies, from sandwiches to soups to seafood salads. On our visit, the backfin crab cake sandwich was on the lunch special board, so we decided to check it out. How was it? Read on and see for yourself!
Crab cakes are available in regular or backfin crab meat varieties, both available in regular or baseball sizes. Crab cakes are available for carryout as sandwiches, but they also sell them in the cold case, where you can take them home cooked or raw. Todays' review is for the regular backfin crab cake sandwich, which as part of the lunch special, is a crab cake on a potato roll, served with chips and cole slaw.
First, expect nothing else on the sandwich other than the crab cake and the roll. No tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, or lemon wedge is served with (although it might be available on request). It might look a little plain when you unwrap the sandwich, but if a crab cake is good, what more do you need?
The backfin crab cake is mostly crab with some visible filler/binder. The crab meat is a mixture of lumps and broken pieces. While the crab meat itself has a nice flavor to it, the full flavor of the meat is sort of masked by the spices used. The spicing is a bit on the salty side, which in this case works when a crab cake is fried, but could still be a little less salty. The filler adds a nice bready texture to the cake. Goes well with the flavor of the crab meat.
The downside to this crab cake is that when it was fried, it was a bit over-fried. The crab meat even in the center of the cake was a bit stringy. That along with the heavily salted spices created a bit of a disappointing sandwich experience. Fried is the default cooking method of this sandwich, so you might want to ask if they can broil it should you wish for them to cook your crab cake.
While there is potential for this crab cake to be really good, the salty spicing would need to be dialed back a bit. The over-fried cake that we received wasn't the best, but that didn't weigh too heavily in the final ratings. They do sell raw crab cakes in both regular and softball sizes. You might be better off cooking them at home should you have the time to do so, or just request the cakes to be broiled.
