Skipjack's Crab House

Skipjack's Crab House has a long history behind it, despite only being open since 2009. There was a seafood wholesaler/retailer down in Louisiana (Seaside Seafood) that would provide Louisiana crabs to a few select crab houses in the Baltimore area that started in the early 70's. Around 2003, two college buddies bought that business, and relocated the carry out to Glen Burnie, which they still operate (known as "The Carry-Out"). Skipjack's exists because they wanted to expand to the north side of Baltimore and be the go-to place for Louisiana-style seafood. While they're not featuring Maryland crabs, Louisiana crabs are often flown in during the off season and are still pretty tasty. But where their crab cakes just as delicious? Let's find out!

Skipjack's offers crab cakes in the usual forms that a crab house normally would. As an appetizer, you can get the Crab Balls, which are the signature crab cake in 6 bite-sized fried portions. Then we move on to sandwiches, where you can get their signature crab cake broiled or fried, served on your choice of bread or crackers, and paired with chips or hand cut fries with Old Bay. Entrees see a single or double platter, broiled or fried, with your choice of two sides. You can also get the Crab Fluff platter, which is a crab cake dipped in tempura batter and fried golden brown.

What we got with our single platter, broiled of course, is a nice 6 oz almost Maryland style crab cake packed with crab of varying lump sizes. We say 'almost' Maryland style because the binder was made with a base of breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, mustard, and spices. You still get the bready binder, but it's also creamy at the same time.

We really liked this crab cake! The crab has a great flavor, nice and sweet. The spice used accompanied the binder and crab meat well. It made itself known without being too assertive and taking focus away from the crab. While a very minor point, the only thing we really tired of was the creaminess of the binder. It's a tad thick because of the bread, and the texture in your mouth towards the end of the crab cake gets in the way a bit. If it were up to us, we'd add a bit more bread to the binder to tip it more in the Maryland style direction. Other than that, if you're ever in the neighborhood, definitely give their crab cake a try!
