Sunshine Grille
If there was ever a location to open a restaurant, Fork, MD would be it. We're not sure what happened to Knife and Spoon, MD, but one thing we do know is that Fork is home to the Sunshine Grille. Sunshine Grille is a Greek and American restaurant featuring fresh, local ingredients, alongside a selection of craft beers and wines, all reasonably priced to keep you coming back. So while they're not part of the regular menu (which is quite extensive), we did happen upon crab cakes on the specials menu one night. Did they live up to the reputation of the Sunshine Grille? Let's find out!
As mentioned, the Crab Cake Platter was on the nightly specials board, so if you are set on crab cakes, be sure to call ahead to see if they are available. The Crab Cake Platter is a double platter of 4oz jumbo lump crab cakes, served with mac and cheese, and stewed green beans.
The crab cakes were made with relatively good sized chunks of crab with minimal broken pieces, and was fairly flavorful, somewhere between slightly sweet and meaty. The binder was a mix of bread, egg, and mayonnaise, with some seasonings mixed in, making this more on the Maryland style, but not bready enough to be really called that. The bread chunks were huge, and in some places, it would seem like you would just get a bite of bread without any crab.
While the crab meat had some flavor, we couldn't really say that much about the rest of the crab cake. The bread used was in large chunks, and the only real flavor in the mix was the bread. If there were any seasonings, we weren't finding any. The parsley dusted over and mixed into the cakes added some color, but no real flavor. The binder flavor overtook the crab meat flavor, which got kind of lost, and after a while, made the crab cake boring to eat. Even if super flavorful crab meat was used, we still think the bread would compete for your attention. Cutting back on the amount of bread used and adding some more spice into the mix would definitely help things out.
Even though we weren't impressed with the crab cake, the mac and cheese was fantastic!
