Supano's Steakhouse
Sinatra. Sammy Davis Jr. Ella Fitzgerald. Walking into Supano's Steakhouse is like walking back into the good old days. Cobblestone streets on the outside, wood and brick on the inside. Sinatra-era music filling the restaurant. Supano's Steakhouse has been a family-owned steakhouse since 1937. It's a place you would think to find in Little Italy, but is located over by the Inner Harbor. Water St is a bit hard to miss, seeing as how from the Light St side, it looks like a small alley that you can't drive on. So how was it, once you stopped circling the block? Let's find out!
The Baltimore Steak and Cake includes a 6oz filet and a 9oz crab cake. Crab cake entree is also available as a single or double platter. All items are served a la carte. Steak and Cake was served with house steak sauce, house cocktail and 2 lemon wedges.
The crab cake itself is huge and comes out shaped like a muffin. It's densely packed with jumbo lumps of crab meat, as well as broken up pieces (about half and half of each). The crab meat itself is nice and sweet, although there were a few "fishy" bits in there. Also noticed a few tiny bursts of crunchy onion, which was a bit unexpected in a primarily soft cake. Other than the noticeable flecks of parsley, the filler/binder didn't have much of any spice to it at all, save for the breading flavor. Texture is bready and moist.
Once you get down to the bottom of the cake, you notice it is perched upon a slice of tomato. This came as a nice surprise, as the crab meat that was sitting on the tomato soaked up it's flavor, giving off a nice flavor burst that complimented the crab cake well.
The crab cake itself was very good, although it could have been moister, and shouldn't have had any "fishy" bits to it. Would also prefer the cake to be comprised of more jumbo lumps and less broken pieces, even if it results in a smaller cake. Quality over quantity.
The steak was a bit of a disappointment as well. From a steakhouse that advertises prime steaks, I would have expected the filet to be about 1" thick, not the 1/2" that looked more like a sirloin. Quality of the filet wasn't all that great, either.
