Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

The Bayou

For over 60 years, there has been a restaurant on Route 40 that has been a local favorite. That establishment would be The Bayou. The current owners purchased the restaurant back in 1982, and ever since, the Wards have strived to provide top quality local cuisine in a place that emanates local ambience. Their three dining rooms are decorated with decoys (as Havre de Grace is known as The Decoy Capital of the World), local scenes depicted in paintings and photographs, and historical newspaper accounts. Of course, it was the crab cakes that attracted us. Read on to see how they were!

The Bayou offers crab cakes as a single or double entree, broiled or fried, with your choice of sides. You can also pair a crab cake with a steak or shrimp combo, or try one as part of their seafood combo. Crab cake sandwiches are available as well, lightly broiled and served on a roll or crackers.

What you get is a respectable 6 oz. crab cake made with a mix of large and medium lumps of crab, with some broken pieces in there as well. The binder is creamy and bready at the same time. Almost Maryland style, but not quite; a nice balance between a saucy and a bready cake.

Our initial impression was: WOW! The crab flavor pops right at the first bite. Nice, sweet, and packed with flavor, just like Maryland crab should be. The creamy binder sits at the back, ready to support that beautiful crab flavor. The mixture of sauce and bread is perfectly balanced to keep the cake moist. The last thing you taste is the spice, which hits the perfect mixture levels. We honestly wouldn't change a thing, other than coming back more often!
