The Point in Fells
The Point in Fells is where you might remember Miss Irene's being located. What used to be a dive bar has since transformed into a large, two-level casual (but upscale) restaurant and bar. Family owned and operated, The Point offers white tablecloths upstairs, and regular bar and casual seating downstairs. Catch them on the right night, and there will be live music in the bar area as well. Their location on the corner of Thames and Ann St provides plenty of outdoor seating during the warmer months, where you can enjoy a beverage and watch the world go by. Just be sure not to drool at the delicious plates going by, most notably the crab cake. Should you make a point to stop by The Point? Read on and see for yourself!
Crab cakes are on the menu as a sandwich and an entree. The sandwich comes with applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and Old Bay mayonnaise. The entree is currently served with a stone ground mustard aioli, and a pepper onion hash (nothing on the menu states if this is a single or double platter). Our review is for the crab cake sandwich.
At first glance, you'll notice that this is a saucy crab cake, made with mostly large lumps of carb bound together with a mayonnaise base and coated in spices on the outside. While we describe it as saucy, it's really just enough sauce to hold all of that delicious crab meat together.
The crab meat is nice and sweet, very good quality crab being used here. The sauce doesn't really taste like much of anything, which is perfect for crab this tasty, but you do get a hint of Old Bay on the back end. Alone, it's a damn good crab cake, and one that you'd normally not want to hide on a sandwich. But the sandwich works so well together that we didn't regret not going for the entree. The applewood smoked bacon provides a smoky, salty flavor that doesn't overpower the crab. The bun is solid and forgiving, with a nice accentuating flavor, and the lettuce and tomato add some crunch for texture. It wouldn't be a bad thing to mix some spice in with the binder so that the Old Bay melds with the crab a bit more, but otherwise we have nothing else to say except to go out and give it a try on your next visit to Fells Point!
