Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

West Kitchen and Tavern

Annapolis has lots of small shops and restaurants that add to the quaintness of this harbor town.  And what a better way to enjoy the charm of Annapolis than by relaxing in a luxury hotel?  West Kitchen & Tavern is a "scratch" kitchen located in the Lowes hotel, offering a wide selection of delicacies celebrating the Chesapeake flavor that has made the area famous.  Using only fresh, local ingredients, they offer a wide variety of plates that you can share or keep all to yourself.  And what Chesapeake menu isn't complete without crab cakes?  Continue on to find out how they turned out!

The Chesapeake Jumbo Lump Crab Cake is offered as an appetizer served on a bed of watercress and a side of tartar, and is also paired with their Surf & Turf.  A crab cake sandwich is also on the lunch menu, served on a brioche bun with avocado aioli, baby greens, tomato, and red onion.  They also offer just the Chesapeake Jumbo Lump Crab Meat on the raw bar menu, served with baby greens, Chesapeake remoulade, drawn butter, Old Bay, and Lemon.  This review is for the appetizer, available on both the lunch and dinner menus.

The crab cake is really just Chesapeake crab meat, bound together with some bread, spices, and possibly egg, lightly sautéed until golden brown.  Crab meat is mostly lumps with very little broken pieces.

On your first bite, all you'll be able to say is 'Wow!' as you taste that explosion of sweet, sweet crab meat.  While the spices are visible, they accentuate where appropriate without getting in the way or detracting from the crab flavor.  The bread keeps things nice and moist, and adds a slight breadiness to the crab cake, but the flavor stays back with the spices.  Overall excellent flavor with a slight hint of spice.  Would prefer that the tartar was kept to the side, instead of the cakes being served on top of it.  If you're not a fan of tartar, then be sure to ask for it without.  Otherwise, there's not much more to say than to order it!
