Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Riverside Pub and Grille

The Riverside Pub & Grille is an upscale sports bar nestled away in a corner off of I-95 at Exit 80 next to the Springhill Suites. It's a small establishment with a few tv's, 3 beers on draft, and a decent selection of wines. Sports memorabilia line the walls of this quaint restaurant. From what we can tell, they've been around for a few years, yet the place looks fairly new. We only happened upon it thanks to an internet search looking for crab cakes in the area. Were they worth the trip? Let's find out!

Sand Springs Saloon

Never underestimate the small mountain towns.  Yes, they may be landlocked and far away from the Chesapeake Bay.  No, there may not be much to do there.  But it all depends on how you look at it.  That small diner that you pass off as being too ordinary may have once served Harry Truman and his family.  The French restaurant may seem out of place, but may have once served as a private club for French airman back in the 1950's.  And maybe, just maybe, Noah's Ark might finally one day be built.

Today's fiber optic field trip takes us to the far reaches of Maryland, out in the Western panhandle, to a small town called Frostburg.  You may have heard of it.  If you're a history buff, then it will be because Frostburg was one of the first towns on the National Road, and quite a popular stopping point for passing celebrities and dignitaries.  Or you may have gone to school here, or known someone who has (go Bobcats!).

Which brings us to Sand Springs.  Now, this establishment may not have the history as some of the other restaurants in town (such as the Princess Restaurant or Au Petit Paris).  But it has been around since 1994, and will probably have some stories of its own to tell.  But they have crab cakes, which will always draw the CCR in.  So how were they?  Let's find out!

Pizzerias aren't typical for offering crab cakes, but this is Maryland, so anything is possible! We've had the pizza from Slices before, and it was pretty decent. So follow along with us to see if their crab cakes follow suit!

Taste of Inspirations

One thing we always wonder here at the CCR is just how good a retail crab cake can be as we are roaming the grocery store aisles.  One past reviewee was Bloom, a niche chain of supermarkets operated by Food Lion (AKA Food Kitty).  The ones in a past review were the ones you could get fresh at the seafood counter.  Shop a little further, perhaps into the frozen food aisle, and on your way to Ben and Jerry's latest flavor, you might just notice the Taste of Inspirations crab cakes.  Calling.  Beckoning.  Wanting to jump into your shopping cart.  And then you think, "What would the CCR do?"  Well, the CCR has been in that predicament.  (Cherry Garcia and Half Baked, if you must know)  And those Taste of Inspirations cakes did fall into our cart.  How were they?  Read on and see how it went down!

The Crab Cab

There are a few great things to love about food trucks. They tend to focus on one thing and do it well; you get affordable culinary-quality food; and they move about, so if you have someplace nearby where you work, say like Farragut Square, you get the best food court you could ask for that constantly changes. While on such a food truck adventure, we came across The Crab Cab, who is relatively new to the DC food truck scene. They bill themselves as a 5-star mobile "restaurant" who is affordable, and uses the freshest ingredients. Not only that, but they also cater. The Twittersphere has nothing but good things to say about The Crab Cab, so we decided to check them out. Was it as "crabtastic" as they say? Let's find out!
