Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

My Three Sons

When you hear the name My Three Sons, you don't immediately think of a local pizza chain. If you're anything like us, your mind reminisces of the days gone by of the Douglas family, and start to wonder if they ever rerun that show on Nick At Nite. But instead, we believe the name stems from the fact that the owners have three sons. In any case, they get their inspiration from Mediterranean cuisine, and utilize products from local Harford county farms, stands, and businesses. Along with the many pizzas, sandwiches, and salads, are the crab cakes. Read along to find out how they were!

Old Bay Crab Cakes

What name is more 15.00 associated with crab cakes (and crabs in general) than Old Bay?  Made by McCormick right here in Baltimore, Old Bay seasoning (originally named "Delicious Brand Shrimp and Crab Seasoning") has been around for over 70 years.  Make no mistake, it is superbaisle on everything from crabs and shrimp, to french fries and mac and cheese.  So imagine our surprise when we noticed Old Bay Brand crab cakes in the frozen food aisle.  Not just an off-brand that uses Old Bay, but the actual brand.  Surely these must live up to the box promises of "premium restaurant quality" jumbo lump crab?  Well, we took the bait.  Read on to find out if they live up to the name.

Pat's Pizzeria

Pat's Pizzeria, or Pat's Family Restaurant as you may also know them, started out in Pennsville, NJ back in 1974. Since then, Pat's has grown to be a regional pizza chain in the MD/NJ/DE/PA area. Their pizza speaks for itself, and when the pizza is good, the other menu items tend to follow suit. Did this pattern stay true for their crab cakes? Let's find out!

With all of these excellent crab cakes in the area, why would anyone go to Red Lobster for them? We were surprised that they serve live lobsters and fresh fish. But crab cakes are a bit dubious. Were they good enough to make us "seafood differently"? Let's find out!

Taste of Inspirations

One thing we always wonder here at the CCR is just how good a retail crab cake can be as we are roaming the grocery store aisles.  One past reviewee was Bloom, a niche chain of supermarkets operated by Food Lion (AKA Food Kitty).  The ones in a past review were the ones you could get fresh at the seafood counter.  Shop a little further, perhaps into the frozen food aisle, and on your way to Ben and Jerry's latest flavor, you might just notice the Taste of Inspirations crab cakes.  Calling.  Beckoning.  Wanting to jump into your shopping cart.  And then you think, "What would the CCR do?"  Well, the CCR has been in that predicament.  (Cherry Garcia and Half Baked, if you must know)  And those Taste of Inspirations cakes did fall into our cart.  How were they?  Read on and see how it went down!
