The Red Brick Station is a restaurant and brewpub located in The Avenue at White Marsh. Independently owned and operated, they strive to provide their guests with creative, English style dishes and English style beers. While the inside is large and accommodating, the outside covered deck is where you want to be in the warmer months. But we're not here just for the beer. We're also looking to see how an English style pub fares with their crab cakes! Read on to see how they did!
Nick's Fish House is a fairly large establishment, located right on the water in South Baltimore. It's not the easiest place to find as the roads get a little wonky over by the Hanover St. bridge, but once you find it, you won't be disappointed. Open year-round, Nick's has indoor and outdoor seating, water views, cold beer, fresh crabs, and live entertainment. Slips are available if you arrive by boat, or you can just walk over if you arrive by cruise ship. You'd expect a place that knows crabs and seafood to have a stellar crab cake. Were we disappointed? You probably know Joe's Crab Shack from the commercials you see on TV. Driving past one, it may remind you of a Bubba Gump's. More perplexing than anything else may be that this is one crab shack that you can't get steamed crabs at. Well, not like what we're used to here in Maryland. Buckets of crab legs just aren't the same as a steaming pile of crabs in the center of the table. But despite that little difference, they do have crab cakes on the menu. Are they respectable enough to be served in Maryland? Let's find out!
Bruce Bitner's has been a family-owned restaurant for over 30 years, and prides itself on being the "Cheers of Bel Air". Not sure if that's anything in comparison to being the Prince, but having a restaurant that produces a warm, cozy environment, a scratch kitchen in the back, and prompt, cheerful service does lend itself to the Cheers experience. All without the trip to Boston! With fresh, local ingredients coming out onto our plates, we couldn't wait to try their crab cakes! Follow along on our journey to see how they turned out!
SeaPack is a familiar frozen seafood company that you've most likely come across in the grocery store, and probably grew up on. They are most notably known for their shrimp products, ranging from popcorn shrimp to jumbo butterfly shrimp. So many shrimp products that they'll keep 'ole Bubba Gump happy for at least a month. We've always known that they have a Maryland crab cake, but haven't been able to find them in the stores yet. So imagine our surprise when we find the mini crab cakes in one of our local Giant stores! We took one for the team to get this week's review, so read on and see how our experience was!
The Tidewater Grille is located right on the Susquehanna River, complete with outdoor seating overlooking the water, and free boat docking for their customers. No matter where you sit, you'll always have a view of the river, and everything happening in and around it. In fact, this is Havre de Grace's only waterfront restaurant. So seeing as how you can't get any closer to the water, you would hope that they know how to do seafood right.
