Bad Monkey Bar & Grill
Summertime in Maryland means one thing to many -- road trip downy ocean, 'hon! And a trip to Ocean City might involve crabs. If you're not standing in line to sit at a paper-lined table to crack crabs amongst pitchers of Natty Boh and friends, then you're going to get your crab fix another way. Maybe, perhaps, a crab cake? That's where the Bad Monkey Bar & Grill comes in. Located midtown on 58th St, the Bad Monkey is conveniently located to just about anywhere on the island and ready to fulfill whatever your need -- carry out or eat in; breakfast, lunch, or dinner; free water or choosing from a wide selection of beers. Whatever it is, they've got you covered. And they certainly had us covered for crab cakes. Read on to see how they were!
The Bad Monkey serves crab cakes as both a sandwich and an entree. The sandwich is a crab cake with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce served with truffle fries; the entree is a double platter with tomato cucumber salad and truffle fries.
The crab cake is jumbo lump crab meat packed tight with egg, bread, and spices. Seeing as how we went with the sandwich, it was served on a poppy seed roll. Lumps of crab are decently sized without being too overworked or broken up. Binder is just enough to hold things together without getting in the way.
Overall, we thought this was a really nice effort by the Bad Monkey. Crab meat was nice and sweet (as it should be in a town known for crabs!), and the spicing complimented the crab flavor nicely, despite being a bit forward with making its presence known. The cake has good moisture levels, although as far as temperature went, ours was a tad cold in the center.
Unless you can get an entree platter with just one crab cake, our recommendation is to order the sandwich "on crackers" (or without the bun). The bun ended up being nothing special, just bread that was fairly plain, and the lettuce and tomato did nothing but add color (but that's probably not as much of a bad thing as we're making it out to be). But the binder didn't really hold the cake together as you eat the sandwich, so you end up eating most of it off of the plate anyway. Despite all of that, the cake itself tasted wonderful, so you should certainly check it out if you're in the area!
