Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Chesapeake Inn

Chesapeake City was originally called Bohemian, or Bohemia Village, until the completion of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, when it was changed to its current name. That's your historical Maryland fact for the day. Why does this matter? Because you can't visit Chesapeake City without visiting, or being told to visit, the Chesapeake Inn. The Chesapeake Inn is a dual-level facility, with the lower portion being known as "The Deck" that serves lite fare, and the upstairs (or main dining area) serving upscale American fare. No matter which level you dine at, the crab cake is still the same. Read on to see if it's worth motoring on over for!

The main dining area at the Chesapeake Inn offers a crab cake as a main entree, or as an enhancement, on the dinner menu; as a sandwich or an entree on the lunch menu; or as an enhancement on the Sunday Brunch menu. The Deck also offers the crab cake sandwich, and, of course, crab as an ingredient is used throughout all menus. This review is for the Perfect Ten, or Surf & Turf as it's more commonly known, on the main dining room's dinner menu. The Perfect Ten pairs a 4oz crab cake with a 6oz filet.

The crab cake at the Chesapeake Inn consists of mostly broken up crab meat with a predominately mayonnaise-based binder, bread, and seasonings.  The binder also includes what we suspect to be chopped onions, and lends itself to giving the crab cake a saucy consistency. All of this crabby goodness is pan sautéed to a golden brown.

As one would expect with the caliber that precedes the Chesapeake Inn's reputation, the crab cake was quite good. Maryland Blue Crab has a signature flavor, and they make sure to highlight it. Although there was a bit more binder in the mix than we would have expected. Despite the consistency, it supports the structure of the crab cake well, but could use less binder, even if it results in a smaller crab cake. The only thing that we could really have done without was with the crunchy bits in the binder. Other than that, the flavor is spot on and a fine example of what a Maryland crab cake should be.
