Bayard House
The Bayard House in Chesapeake City, MD has a long standing history. Considered to be the oldest building in town, the original building, which was a manor, was built in the 1780's. It wasn't until 1829 that the location was first used as a public building, being converted to a tavern and an inn (then called Chick's Tavern). Since then, the building has changed owners, at one point in time being sold to a descendent of the original owner. Not until the early 80's did Allaire du Pont purchase the property and restore it, along with much of the village, and can still be seen today. But we didn't turn out for a history lesson. We came for crab cakes! Read on and let us let you know how they were!
The Bayard House offers crab cakes as a sandwich or an entree. The sandwich serves a crab cake on a toasted potato roll with lettuce, tomato, onion, and your choice of cocktail or tartar sauce. The entree serves a crab cake topped with lemon burre blanc sauce. Both market priced. A petite crab cake is paired with both the surf & turf entree, as well as the surf & turf eggs benedict on the brunch menu.
The crab cake is made up of lump crab meat bound together with a predominately mayonnaise base, with some bread, light spice, and parsley for color. The crab used is nice and sweet, and the spicing is light but noticeable.
Overall, the crab cake was about average -- you won't be disappointed if you order it, but it's nothing you'll go out of your way for. The crab meat flavor is always nice, but a good crab cake isn't about just crab, you need some depth of flavor. That's where the spicing comes through, but with this crab cake, while you can taste the spice, it's a bit too light.
As a sandwich, the tomato actually takes over as the predominant flavor, moving the crab flavor to the background. The bun is the second flavor you taste. Given this experience, you're probably better off ordering the crab cake as an entree or as part of one of the surf & turf options. Even still, this crab cake needs some bigger flavors.
