510 Johnny's
510 Johnny's is one of Bel Air's newest dining and nightlife locations, taking over where Bellissimo used to be next to Target. While the space is mostly the same layout, it definitely got a makeover and no longer sports the inside of a ships hull, but rather a grungy, but classy, restaurant where good food and music meet. So with new owners, a new look, and a new menu, there's only one question on our mind: how are the crab cakes? Read on and find out!
510 Johnny's offers crab cakes primarily as a sandwich and as an entree. The sandwich serves a colossal crab cake on a kaiser roll, broiled or fried, alongside fries and a pickle; the entree features one or two colossal crab cakes, broiled or fried, with a side of house, greek, or Caesar salad, and two sides. Sandwiches are a fixed price, whereas entrees are Market Price. Other menu items also feature crab cakes, such as the 510 Johnny Cakes, which are colossal crab cakes topped with crab imperial.
The crab cake itself is a saucy cake that has a really thick consistency. Giant lumps of crab, along with some broken pieces, are bound together with a mostly bread and egg binder, along with some spices. Size is respectable at around 8oz.
While the crab meat had a nice flavor to it, the binder, while tasty, could have used more. Luckily there are shakers of Old Bay at the table, but it's always better to have the spice marry into the mixture. Also, the thickness of the binder is a bit too thick in some spots. When the proportions of crab to binder are good, the bite is delicious. In spots where there is more binder than crab, it comes off as mushy bread.
Despite the mixture inconsistencies, overall the crab cake is actually very good. The crab is good, and the binder flavor accentuates the flavor profile. Just get the mixture more thoroughly blended, and you'll enjoy it, too!
