Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Box Hill Pizzeria

Way back in December 2011, friend of the Review Jeff L had suggested Box Hill (see, we do listen!).  Our first thought was "A pizzeria?  Really?"  But then we looked into it, and eventually made the visit.  While it may not look like much from the outside, take a step inside, and you'll immediately notice all of the celebrity photos, as well as the wall of awards.  Continually being showered with awards and praise (such as Best Crab Cake by Baltimore Magazine in 2009), the Box Hill Pizzeria has been delivering crab cakes from a secret family recipe since 1984, both to the table as well as through the mail.  So with all of the talk, the CCR was set to see if the rumors were true.  Follow along as we take a road trip up to the Bel Air area to feast our eyes (and our mouths) on these award winning crab cakes!

Lots of platter choices, too many to list (menu is online if you want to see for yourself).  On review today is the Crab Cake Special #2, which comes with fries, cole slaw, and garlic bread.  The crab cake can be broiled or fried, served with lemon and tartar sauce, and are available in single or double platters.

Just as the picture shows, the crab cake is a large 8 oz cake packed with large lumps of crab, held together by a mustard/mayonnaise mixture with some breadcrumbs for consistency.  Broken crab pieces are kept to a minimum, and there also appears to be some chopped up red pepper bits and parsley mixed in as well.

The cake is saucy and moist, but holds together well.  The binder flavor has a light flavor that accentuates the sweetness of the jumbo lump crab meat.  While a bit heavier on the breadcrumbs than other crab cakes, it does lend a nice consistency.  The spicing was very minimal, as to let the the crab flavor come through.  While this is an excellent crab cake as-is, some additional spice would add another flavor level.  And it's available via mail order, so once you see for yourself, you can ship some off to your friends and family
