Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Edgewater Restaurant Backfin Crab Cakes

The Edgewater Restaurant has been around since 1948, and is one of those local institutions that will get people all excited at just a mention of the name.  A sheer testament to their ability to survive as long as they have, you'll get the same reaction from everyone -- the crab cakes are their most favorite thing in the world.  But, the one thing they neglect to tell you, is WHICH crab cakes are their favorite.  You see, Edgewater sells two kinds -- jumbo lump and backfin.  One could assume that the jumbo lumps are it, but if you happen to show up on a Wednesday, you'll notice that the backfin crab cakes are the special of the day!  Not wanting to pass up a good deal, the CCR decided to focus their efforts on the backfins, at least this time around.  Are they as legendary as jumbo lumps?  Time to see for ourselves!

The backfin crab cake special is a double platter served with fries or browned potato, as well as a trip to the salad bar and rolls.  The backfin crab cake only comes fried, but if ordering off of the normal menu, you can choose between a single or double platter.  Tartar and cocktail sauces are served alongside your rolls and butter.

Normally when you think of backfin crab cakes, the crab meat is shredded or broken up.  The crab meat at Edgewater has a much different texture -- it's almost like it's in little chunks.  While fried on the outside, they are very moist on the inside -- more on the saucy side.  The sauce has a slight hint of spice, but mostly seems like it is predominately mayonnaise.

The fried crust on the crab cake adds some interesting texture to an already interesting texture from the crab.  The crab meat has some good flavor to it, but sort of gets lost along with the crust and sauce.  The lightness of the spicing doesn't really register too much, so while you do get the crab and mayo flavors, there isn't really much else to it.  But, still, if you are looking for a really good value on a Wednesday night, this crab cake is pretty decent.  (Next time, we'll go all out for the jumbo lump crab cakes, so stay tuned for that!)
