Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Ellicott Mills Brewing Company

If you're not already familiar with Ellicott City, it started out as a Quaker settlement back in 1772, and boasts the oldest standing B&O Railroad station. It is also home to many unique shops and restaurants. One of which is Ellicott Mills Brewing Company. They've been around since 1997, brining a little bit of Germany to this historic town, specializing in Central European style lagers. The food also matches the brewing styles, with a liittle bit of everything for everyone. While the beer may lure us in, if there are crab cakes on the menu, we'll find them! While hard to pass by all of the German tavern fare on the menu, we stuck to our guns and gave them a shot. Read along to see what we thought!

Crab cakes appear on the menu in a few different places. For entrees, you can choose between the Twin Crab Cakes, or the Ribeye and Crab Cake, or on the sandwich side, you have the Crab Cake Sandwich. Each selection comes with an array of side items to choose from, so be sure to check out their menu for your options. This review is for the Crab Cake Sandwich, which was served on a potato roll with lettuce, tomato, Old Bay mayonnaise, and house-made potato chips.

All crab cakes are made from a mix of Lump and Backfin crab meat, broiled until golden brown, about 4 ounces in size. All of that crab is bound together Maryland style, with a primarily egg-and bread-based binder and spices added in. Crab meat is mostly broken up, with some small- to medium-sized lumps in there.

We thought this was a pretty decent representation of a Maryland style crab cake. The crab has a nice, sweet flavor to it, and while the spicing tries to fight for your attention, it ends up conceding to the crab, accentuating it nicely after the initial bite. Although we'd rather have this crab cake as an entree instead of the sandwich. There was just too much bun for a 4 ounce crab cake. A bigger crab cake would solve that problem, or possibly a thinner bun. Bun aside, this crab cake is certainly worth of your attention should you find your way into the brewpub for a few pints!
