Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Little Havana

It's hard to believe that Little Havana has been around for 20 years! What was an old abandoned warehouse was transformed into a Cuban getaway right in South Baltimore. Known for their consistency, killer mojitos, and super fun Brunch, Little Havana has quickly become a staple in the Federal Hill neighborhood. So you really don't think of crab cakes when you think Cuban food, but it wouldn't be Baltimore if a crab cake wasn't on the menu. So hop aboard, set sail for South Baltimore with us, and see what we thought!

Crab cakes appear on Little Havana's menu as both a sandwich and a double entree. The sandwich is served broiled on a brioche bun, with bibb lettuce, tomato, and raw onion. The platter features two jumbo lump crab cakes, also broiled, served with sweet potato fries, veggies, and a side of Havana tartar sauce. Both selections are Market Price. This review is for the sandwich.

The crab cake was made up of mostly broken up crab lumps, but still retains its nice, sweet, crabby flavor. All of that crab was bound together with a mostly egg-based binder, with some spice and parsley for color.  While the spicing was light-handed, it compliments the crab flavor well.  The brioche bun has a neutral flavor that doesn't get in the way of what matters most.  The lettuce and tomato were basically a garnish and didn't add to the experience whatsoever.

For the most part, you taste  the crab cake front and center, with some of that spice coming in on the back end.  While we'd always like a bit more spice, we thought this was an outstanding crab cake that would pair well with a cool, refreshing mojito on a warm summer day.
