Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

G&M Restaurant

Ah, the infamous G&M.  You can't start any crab cake discussion without any mention of them, most often being pitted against Faidley's.  G&M has been around since 1972, churning out their crab cakes to high praises and accolades ever since.  The CCR has personally been eating G&M for years.  So in the great crab cake war, how does G&M stand out amongst the others?  Click on through to find out!

Lunch prices appear to differ slightly from dinner prices, but not by much.  (This review was performed during lunch hours)  Crab cake sandwich is offered with lettuce and tomato on your choice of roll or crackers.  Platters (single or double) come with your choice of 2 sides or a tossed salad (but not both, as opposed to dinner, where my last dinner visit in 2010 resulted in 2 sides plus the salad).  Cocktail and tartar offered when ordering, and Old Bay and hot sauce are offered when your meal arrives.

As you have rightfully heard, the crab cakes are comprised of about 95% jumbo lumps of crab meat, held together by binder, but with no filler in sight (maybe a few bread crumbs, but any present mix into the sauce and go unnoticed).  This makes for what we here at the CCR like to describe as a "saucy" crab cake.  And they're HUGE.  A single platter is certainly enough to fill anyone up, but if you are super hungry (or just want an excuse to bring one home), then go ahead and order a double (but it might just be better off going next door to the Carry Out counter and taking one home uncooked).  [Yes, the picture is of just a single crab cake]

As far as flavor goes, I really wish it had more.  The crab meat, while large and plentiful, lacks that character sweetness of the Maryland blue crab.  [Other sites have confirmed that G&M uses imported crab meat, but the CCR has not.]  The binder sauce has a nice flavor with a bit of a peppery kick to it that can really accentuate the flavor of the crab, but without more of the crab flavor coming forward, the overall taste is bland and monotonous, with not much complexity.  I'm not one to put extra Old Bay or hot sauce on my crab cakes, although time time I might have considered it.

While not as good as I remember it being (going back as early as 2010 for comparison), you do get your moneys worth and will not leave hungry.  Overall, still pretty decent, but not what it once was.
